Remember a trending video during the Christchurch New Zealand terrorist attack, when a teenager egged a Far-Right Australian Senator? Perhaps some Nigerians got the memo and now a Nigerian Senator may write a book in the near future titled, “the Trials of Brother Ekweremmadu.”

A video has emerged of Prof Ike Ekweremmadu’s supposed assault in Germany. As a Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial Zone, his attempt to celebrate the New Yam festival, ended with the distinguished Senator being heckled and beating.

Various perspectives have emerged regarding the intentions of the ‘beaters’, one of which was a protest of the resurgence of killing in Ekweremmadu’s Awgu hometown by herdsmen. Suspected herdsmen who were arrested and paraded last week confessed to killing a Reverend Father and kidnapping a traditional ruler in Awgu.

In the video, the narrator is heard shouting, “They are killing your people and raping your women and you are eating new yam.” Well, if the Senator knew that Yam was a forbidden food for a person whose people are killed, maybe he would opt for bread, Nah?

Senator Ekweremmadu has since released a statement about his efforts in curbing rising insecurity in his zone and region, while absolving the protesters who he named as members of the IPOB, off their supposed sins.

Some reactions to the news over the internet showed that while some are happy that Nigerians are standing up to their leaders, others think the violence was uncalled for. Maybe violence is not a great strategy in a democracy, but do peaceful protesters ever get anything done in Nigeria, apart from getting killed?

Would this make other leaders watch their backs? Or simply do their jobs? Or both? Talk about it in the comment section. Read the full story here
