From the Trump visit to the Church visit, Kanye has stopped midway, to record an extensive body of work which is currently shaking the foundation of hip hop, entertainment and political correctness around the world. This body of work could have taken another name, but Kanye in his defiant nature chose to go with ‘Jesus is King’. Not ‘God is King’ or ‘Allah is King’ or ‘Oluwa is King’, but Jesus is king. This album comes after his self-claimed and famed conversion to Christianity reported here.

Among the Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism) which are easily the most popular across the world, only Christians regard Jesus as King and Son of God. Yes, Jesus is recognized in the Bible as well as in the Quran, but for what roles? For the Quran, Jesus is one of the prophets and for the Bible, he is King and the son of God. This is a major source of conflict between Christianity and other religions. As such, Kanye’s album title is as specific as it is controversial.

There is a lot of reasons why Kanye’s new body of work is ‘anti-political correctness’, a wave of communications reforms allegedly driven by the need to bring everyone’s individuality and beliefs into the mainstream and well, if possible, make it the mainstream. To what extent is this possible?

This new wave has given birth to many controversies including the dissociating of religion from government and public places and the corresponding hustle for coolness by being as anti religion as possible. At some points, the jostle for ‘coolness’ has increasingly made people seem less and less religious, with proclamations and songs like, ‘God Is a Woman’ by Ariana Grande receiving a lot of positive coverage in the mainstream media.

However, as defiant as Kanye is, he is out, against all odds, touring on an album heralding the kingship of Jesus, generating controversies as it is, having that his fan base is supposedly divided. Earlier 2019, Kanye seemingly annihilated half his fans with controversial statements about slavery being a choice, Blacks in the US not needing to vote Democrats all the time, and the ultimate visit to the White House, to meet Donald Trump, the controversial US President.

To top it all, the mainstream media which the ‘Tweeterati’ President has most often dubbed as ‘Fake News’ has in many ways, given a ‘not so wholesome’ coverage to Kanye’s Jesus is King. While some people see a deeper conspiracy to that, others just think it is because of Kanye’s friendship with Trump.

Kanye was at Lakewood church where Joel Osteen happens to be the Overseer, after the ministration at the Prison. Joel’s history of purportedly sending victims of Hurricane Harvey away did not help the situation, as he and Kanye immediately became the object of many objections.

People immediately remembered the incidence amidst objections that Joel Osteen actually did not send victims away, but told them that his church was flooded and he was cleaning it up before others could have access. Just like the rave of the cancel culture which Barack Obama spoke against last month (almost got him cancelled), Joel and Mr West have both borne the brunt of people’s wagging keypads.

Whether the animosity came mainly off Kanye’s album, his behavior prior to the album or after the album, more is left to be discovered, but what many have not said, is that the album is trash.

According to a review by Pitchfork, ” As West sells it, figuratively and literallyJesus Is King is a repudiation of his past sin, an absolution, a blank slate from which to spread the word of a very specific God…”

Jesus Is King opened at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 264,000 album-equivalent units, of which 109,000 were pure album sales. This gave West his ninth consecutive album to debut atop the chart, tying him with a record held by fellow rapper Eminem. \

Infact, there has been a pocketful of accolades from people who see the song as spiritual therapy, especially from a person who has been neck deep into the world of hip hop all his life, while marrying a woman whose alleged ticket to fame was a sex tape.

In the Nigerian society, the post for the Mummy G.O, a post reserved for the wife of the General overseer, would have been a tussle, because how do you give such posts to someone whose sex tape is still up on Pornhub?

Well, answering that question or rather, attempting to, almost all Christians must have studied the part of the Bible where Jesus, who Kanye says is King, let Mary Magdalene go sinless, escaping mob action for her alleged sin of fornication and prostitution.

Putting into context, if a woman is found fornicating or committing adultery in those days, you would be stoned to death. To understand what this sin means, how many crimes require the death penalty in the U.S today? Well, none. So for all the mass shooters, the much they can get is a life sentence.

Why condemn Kim when Jesus has let her go free? And if you are not a Christian, of what use is the argument over who becomes Mummy G.O, to you? Perhaps your argument is far from what she does with her vagina. If that is the case, who then is perfect? As a matter of fact, people call it media sensationalism, but Kim has been very virulent in her calls and actions for Prison reforms. Read here.

Talking about prisons, the recent barrage of encomium as well as invective were let down on Kanye, after videos of him ministering to prisoners at the Harris County jail.

While some people felt it was a wholesome behavior quoting the bible, “when I was in prison, you came to see me,” others felt it was a PR stunt used to promote the album and not forgetting Kanye’s purported narcissism. Whatever that is, is left for the future, but the answer for Kanye’s motive of spreading the ‘Jesus is King’ mantra is found in St Paul’s Letter to the Philippians vs 18,

“It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the Gospel. The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir uptrouble for me while I am in chains. But what does it matter? The Important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this, I rejoice. ”
