Ruiz and Joshua comparison

In one of the biggest upsets in not only Boxing but sports history, Mexican-American boxer Andy Ruiz Jr (33 wins, 1 loss, 22 KOs) defeated Nigerian-British champion Anthony Joshua (22 wins, 1 loss, 21 KOs) in the seventh round and captured the unified WBA, WBO, IBO, and IBF heavyweight titles.

His financial reward? £5,000,000. That’s about N2.3 billion (N465/ £) before he pays taxes and settles his management team and others. Anthony Joshua banked £20,000,000 (N9.3 billion). We can assume Ruiz will earn more for the rematch, when it happens.

It was a remarkable achievement considering that Ruiz stepped in as a late replacement for Jarrell Miller (whose failed drug tests prevented him from facing Joshua) and had only six weeks to prepare for the fight. Joshua, making his debut in America at the fabled Madison Square Garden arena, was the overwhelming favorite, with online betting house Sportsbooks listing him as a -2500 favorite (risk $2,500 to win $100), while Ruiz was set at +1100 (risk $100 to win $1100).
